I disagree with most of the above comments - there are plenty of situations where the co-operation play should be ignored. I would generally not bet into a dry pot unless I felt firstly that I was potentially ahead of the all-in player. However, if i felt there was merit in creating some side action, ie. to tell a new 3-part story to the other player that cud result in me taking some of their chips then I might. Players (particularly like the purists above) put a premium on knocking players out far too early in a tournament. It doesn't matter to me if my meddling keeps another player in as long as I have taken an action that i believed had a positive expectation for me. Starting a dry pot on the flop, to bet and build it up on the turn to get your opponent to fold on the river is a powerful play (a play that is given so much more credibility for the very fact that purists make the assumption that a player wud not do this without something big). So what if the all-in player has u crushed. Good for him - the chips weren't on there way to you anyway. I don't care about him unless I'm on a FT and moving up a spot in the money.
I would also bet into a dry pot to protect my hand. Say I have 1010 in the CO and i raise to 600 with the blinds 100 and 200. The player in the SB calls for there remaining 600 chips and the BB feeling he's getting a good price calls too. If the flop comes 9, 6, 4, I will definitely bet if it is checked to me. My hand needs to be protected. I didn't start this hand by committing to a co-operation play - it was put upon me. If the SB had folded and the BB had defended, I would certainly protect my vulnerable hand in this spot so why should i change my game plan now. I have hit the perfect flop for my hand. I am not about to give a free card to the BB just to up the chances of knocking out the SB. That would be absurd. If I bet 1500 into this pot and the BB folds - and the SB shows 44 for bottom set, I don't give a hoot if the turn comes 5 and the river comes 2 and the BB starts complaining that he laid down 33 which wudda str8ened, therefore knocking the SB out. I played my hand correctly.
