Trifecta betting.
I'm not sure what they're called elsewhere in the world.
In Australia, selecting the first 3 placed horses in a race is called a trifecta.
Not sure if this will be applicable elsewhere, will try to explain it anyway.
We have a state sanctioned tote system of betting here called the TAB (Totalisator Agency Board)
The prices are not fixed, instead, over 20% of the total betting pool is taken to cover costs & tax, then the remainder is divided among the punters who won, in proportion to how much they bet.
I've never liked this system for 2 reasons.
1 - It's disappointing to back a horse early showing 6-1 for the win, only to find after the win that late bets plunged the horse into 4-1 & we have to accept that payout.
2 - I find 20% tax on the pool to be unfairly excessive & don't believe it's possible to win long term when up against such bad odds.
So I've long preferred taking fixed prices with bookies for win bets,
but have still been lured to the TAB to play a few small trifectas, in hope of that big return.
Now, back to trifectas.
The TAB offers this bet where if you correctly pick the top 3 horses, there can be a nice payout, often into the thousands, for only a $1 bet.
If you like #'s 3, 7 & 1, in that order, & place $1 on it, approx 80% of the total trifecta pool is shared among the winners.
Or you can box the 3 selections together, covering all 6 possible combinations of the 3 = $6.
Or you can take a box 4, or 5 or more.
Another popular method is selecting 1 horse to win, into 3 or 4 horses for 2nd, into 6 or more horses for 3rd.
The more combinations you cover, the more it costs to place the bet.
Aussie states have their own TAB's (some of the smaller states have merged their TAB's)
I often notice in races where roughies fill the placings, wild differences between the payouts in different states.
In a recent race where the faves floundered, the trifecta payouts were as follows -
NSW TAB = $7,800
Super TAB = $16,200
UNI TAB = $11,500
Now I don't know about you but If I got this trifecta on NSW TAB, although celebrating the windfall, I'd still feel ripped off after comparing the payouts with the other TABs, especially with SuperTAB.
Now some of our bigger bookies are trying to get a slice of the trifecta market, in recent years they've started offering payouts of top fluctuation between our big 3 TAB's
This is good news for the punter :-)
But my fave bookie must have got burnt because last year in the news letter it was announced they'd guarantee the payout to be at least better than the 2nd best TAB payout.
Shortly after, I landed a trifecta that paid -
NSW TAB = $4,100
Super TAB = $4,200
UNI TAB = $9,200
I ended up with $4,300 when there were other bookies around still offerring to pay top fluctuation.
Talk about mixed emotions...
If you have Trifecta betting available where you live,
stay tuned to this thread.
I'll be sharing a method of placing trifectas that has been very kind to me over the last few years. 8)
