Now, I don't know a thing about horses but these guys I used to work with in San Diego were making money at it pretty regularly. They had it down to a science and won everytime. We are all of course numbers geeks and so I will tell you they set a number value to everything. The horses weight, every ranking, the rider, the diet and even the tempature. It was the craziest thing ever. They seldom lost but they spent years figuring stuff out.

To consistently win at betting horses, it's somewhat like poker. You must be better than most of the other bettors. When you bet horses, the odds are based on the % bet on each horse, so you are betting against the other bettors. Very, very, very few horse bettors make money! For those that do it's pretty much a full time job. The "rake" is high also, anywhere from 17% to 25%! Stick with poker unless you really enjoy watching the horses. Plus, there's no bluffing in horse racing.
