A lot of people tend to do chip tricks at the table to show they have experience at playing poker. Bordom also plays a role in performing the tricks as well as showboating.

I play mostly live NL ring games of various different poker games and find that I fair very well when nobody knows me. I try to put out a very loose image while playing a very solid game. However, when I finally get the table playing loose and chasing everything, then bust 2 or 3 people they tend to remember getting busted and by whom, thereby limiting the amount of action I can get for a while. It is far more profitable in the short run if everybody thinks you are just another newbie sucker, it puts their "calling reflex" in overdrive and the pot size soars. Fortunately with the popularity of poker today I can usually just stay away from a particular card room for a month and find a whole new crop of retards upon my return. In short, it is hard to play the role of Loose Agressive Donkey while you are shuffling 2 stacks of 40 chips in each hand.

Good point, I try to be as normal as possible and don't do any tricks and look like I'm just there for fun. sklansky writes about this in 'hold em for advanced players' i never really thought about it, when i was starting out.

i think it starts to get pretty annoying afterawhile that clacking sound for 6 hours straight really starts to get to me even more than taking that inevitable bad beat

I think men do it because they cannot scratch or have the remote control ...

Personally I think there are more reasons.
1. Annoy people around them, so they will make wrong decissions.
2. Try to distract people, from the game.
3. Show that you are a good player, that played a lot of games.(what is not always true)
