Default Limit Holdem Cash Game Strategy

Got questions on whether or not you should check-raise the turn? Whether you feel you missed a bet on the river? Or maybe if you should've just checked behind and tried to catch for free?

Maybe you don't play limit and have no idea what I'm talking about. Maybe you're just starting out and looking for some pointers.

In any case, this is the spot for all things limit holdem.

This is my spot, so fire away people!

Trying using hand converter tools, and directly posting up your hand history, it makes things easier. Cdub, can you get a stick of a hand converter tool?

I used to play limit, but hated the loose play and suckouts. What type of hands should you be looking to play in limit holdem? When should you chase and when should you fold? Big pp's never seem to hold up for me in limit since most people are seeing a flop.

Don't chase as much when there are more people in the pot. Also, if someone is bets pf, bets on the flop, and then bets on the turn, you're most likely beat and would need the draw to win. I like to be the aggresor in Limit poker as well. Meaning, If I bet pf, I'll usually bet on the flop if it's HU or with 2 players in the pot. If there's more than that, than I'll check if I miss.

About players who always call, here's a quote from SSHE: "Be glad players call you down. If they didn't, you might just go broke".

Basically--(adding on to GKunit's response)

Calling raises preflop is almost always a bad play. Either your hand isn't good enough to call 2 bets cold to begin with, or it is very strong and you should 3 bet. Calling 2 bets cold is ALMOST ALWAYS no good.

As far as what hands to play, try to stick to the top tier hands, naturally. Raise all of your strong hands, and keep position/pot odds in mind. If I hold J 10 hearts in MP and no one has entered the pot, I am not coming in either. If we have a limper but we are in late postion, come on in, if we have a limper but we are in EP, probably a good idea to fold marginal holdings.

Pot odds post flop is also important. Many times players will be getting correct odds to draw and "suck out" with over cards. This is part of limit and we should get used to it. Just remember that they have the odds to call, but your hand will hold up more than there draw will hit, creating a very +EV situation for the players playing made hands versus draws/junk.

I have gone up as high as 50-100 Limit, and for all of the people that chase down hands in Limit poker, there are just as many of the "all-in" idiots preflop that will hit that cooler on the river to beat your AA with their 72.
In the end, the odds of winning are about the same in limit, as in any other game. It is a totally different animal than NL though, that is for sure.

Default Limit Hold-em

If you are going to play Limit, especially at small stakes (8-16 or lower live, 1-2 online) Read Small Stakes Hold'em. This book will open your eyes and really help your play.
