Default In Rough Times

Sup everyone,

I've been getting crushed the past month or so by our good friend variance. No matter what I do my opponent catches up. I've been losing a lot when I'm ahead 25% or better, two and three outers, four card board flushes, you name it and it's happened. I try and make moves and someone calls with Ax and will catch it.

Now I know that we all have been there, it comes, goes, inevitably comes back again and again. A huge part of being a good player is having control of your Bankroll.

When times get tough:

1) Playing outside of you BR is one of the biggest killers of poker players. It leds to tilting, bad plays and it's just not fun. Definately never move up to try and make up for lost money, never a good idea imo.

2) It is time to step down a level, maybe even two. If you are not on a hot run, just don't feel like you are in the groove, then move down levels. It's always better to lose less when you are running bad

3) Take a break if needed. Don't think about poker, don't play poker, nothing. Clear you ming of all of the nosense that is going on around you in the poker world.

4) Don't start taking it out on other players that sucked out or got lucky against you. More then likely you have sucked out on players too, just not as much. Remember, If you are a good player and you are always getting your money in when you are ahead, not just talking about having high card, then you are going to get hit with bad beats more then the fish do.

5) Go back to ABC poker. For some reason when I get on a good run I start to change my game and I don't even notice it. I will become hyper aggressive, start playing trashy hands and calling people down, because there is no why that they would've called my preflop raise and my continuation bet with a J8os to catch there straight on the turn.

6) Go back and reread a book that you have already read, even if you've already read it 100 times. Chances are it will sparke something that you had forgot and you will more then likely pick up on something that you didn't the first 100 times.

I will stop rambling for now. I'd like to know what others do when they run into our good friend variance? Oh and btw, if anyone wants to let hiim come over and visit you for awhile, well that would be great, I'm kinda gett'n tired of him.

Thanks,
supfool123

Well I'm now working on a month of continually getting my nuts kicked in. Now yes some, like maybe 2% of it, is from me tilting/playing bad. The majority though is just getting really bad beats. It's not just online either, there is a guy I play HU with everyday at lunch time. He's a good player, but no better then me and I just can't seem to beat him. Yeah there are times he catches me bluffing or something, but once again, I'm way ahead in a hand, get all in and he catches up. I'll flop a straight he catches a flush, I hit a flush he catches a boat or I have AQ and it never fails he has AK. i.e. today we were playing and I have K6, I limps from the button and he checks. The blinds are 100/200 and I have around 1700 and he has 1300. The flop comes out 56K (suits dont matter) and he bets out 200, so I raise it to 800 total. He instantly pushes all in and I call. He turns over K9os and catches his 9 on the river.

When poker deals you lemons the best thing to do is cut that lemon open and squirt lemon juice into your opponents eyes, at least that way he wont be able to see his cards. I can't complain though, the first quarter of this year has been my best as of so far. These are walls that we as poker players hit and imho these are the times that really try you and make you a better player. Losing as little as possible when you are down is a big part of poker and BR management. Well, back to the grind.

Thanks,
supfool123

Damn, I must just suck cause from the looks of it no one else here runs into rough times. If you could please let me know what classes you've taken or who you prey to, to help you avoid variance.

Thanks,

Variance is part of the game. The key is how you handle it when it rears it's ugly head. Sounds to me like you are handling it very well. Keep grinding and things will turn around for you. It's the part of the game we all love to hate.

Well Thank you SOBE and it helped. I just finished 8th out of 329 players in a six handed DS game. There were two players at the end that were just being bullies and I was tired of it. One pushed all in and I called with an A8os adn he turned over QTos. I made the right play, but it was just a coinflip and the poker gods figured he should flop a Q. It was a great night, got some W's on my side...finally
